PBW: NYComicon 2K6

For the full story behind tonight's Photo Blog Wednesday, read last Saturday's post if you haven't already.

On the way to the convention, I took a picture of a building-sized Delta mural that demonstrated just how small the world can be.

In college, playing in the pep band, I used to get into Madison Square Garden(above) for free for all our college team's home games. Those were good times and using the “secret” entrances made me feel like a rock star, even though I played a brass instrument.

A pair of movie posters for X3 led me to believe I was heading in the right direction.

Someday, when I have more time and a better camera, I might have to take pictures from the top of the Empire State Building.

There's the Javits Center, a huge mass of glass and steel that still proved too small to house the massive influx of comics geeks and professionals.

After waiting on line for an hour, I remembered I had my camera with me and took a photo across to the other balcony where I first got on line.

If nothing else, I had architecture to admire while I waited.

11:26? Looks like I would miss the first panel I wanted to see. Also, because televisions are notoriously bad to photograph, you can't see the giant Battlestar Galactica ad that played to a captive audience.

That guy in the cape pointing to the convention entrance looked familiar. As close as I was, it would be another twenty minutes before I reached him.

Yes, that is a six-foot tall LEGO Batman.

Boba Fett walked by, a little too fast for my camera thanks to his jet pack. In the background, a couple of guys were looking at a bird. Or maybe it was a plane....

Finally, I got inside, surrounded by a lot of self-explanatory giant banners like the one above.

I was very tempted to buy this limited edition Bumblebee figurine, but it proved a little too expensive for such a small item, however rare.

When I got home and checked this blurry photo of Erik Larsen, I was a little surprised to see this scary guy staring at me, who I hadn't noticed when I snuck the picture. Who knew he had Warpath as a bodyguard?

There's nothing quite as beautiful as a print of Alex Ross art, especially his rendition of Wonder Woman.

Here are some more Ross prints.

Not a lookalike, hoax, dream or imaginary story, Peter Scolari was actually signing autographs at a comic book convention. You may know him from Bosom Buddies, Newhart, or perhaps Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: The TV Show.

This girl was wearing only chainmail, which could explain my unsteady hand. I need a camera with image stabilization.

This giant banner displays the latest incarnation of my favorite team of super heroes from my favorite publisher.

Here's another giant LEGO construct. I hope they glued those pieces good...

i also saw Professor James Kakalios, author of The Physics of Superheroes.

This was an entertaining DVD featuring LEGO versions of the X-men.

If this guy was working security, I wasn't going to cross paths with him.

Here's a painting by Arthur Suydam.

Answer a trivia question correctly from a category of your choosing and spin the wheel for a chance to win a prize.

Security was REALLY hi-tech at this convention.

There he is, good old Tom Defalco who autographed a book for me.

Besides giant banners, the Marvel booth included a display case with figurines of nearly all their characters.

Meanwhile, DC had a huge banner by Alex Ross.

Finally, I made my way out of the convention center.

Before I left, I stopped at a window over looking the main floor for a view from on high.

Michael Moore distracts Captain America, no doubt planning to use things the hero said out of context in his next “documentary.” Ruining my shot gives me another reason to hate that fat b*****d.

With the crowds slightly saner, I could get a few more shots of the LEGO knight.

Milla Jovovich is a babe that certainly can draw a crowd.

* * *

Of course, my adventure didn't end there, but you'll have to tune in next week to find out where I went next...

Ha! Peter Scolari looks just like he did in the Bob Newhart show. I don't understand why he'd be there. Was he in some geeky thing?

Also, in that Boba Fett picture, the guy's facial expression on the far right is hilarious! He looks terrified and I can only imagine that something is swooping down at him that he's afraid his plastic sword won't be able to handle.

All the pictures are great. I love city pictures. And, naturally, the NYC comicon looks 200% better than the rinky dink one we have in Pittsburgh. Thanks so much for sharing.

I've never been to a comic book convention, but looking at your pictures, I couldn't help but wonder where The Archies were.

I've never been to any kind of convention, actually. I would go to a Star Trek one, or a Buffy one, I guess. Now I kinda want to.

Great pictures. I love PBW!

I have a friend who looks like Milla Jovovich. Keep your shirt on though. She's spoken for.

What are the odds? Thanks for the tip, though. I wouldn't want to lure her away with my shirtless machismo. =)
